I saw Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer at the Oakford on Sunday as part of the Hot Muffins Burlesque Night. Thought he was very funny indeed! Just found his MySpace page which includes my favourite song "Timothy" (no prizes for guessing who that's about) as well as other spiffing tunes such as "Straight Out Of Surrey".

PS the rest of the Burlesque Night was very good as well! :-)

Rediscovering classics in the cassette archive [Aug. 28th, 2008|11:21 pm]

[Current Music |PWEI - Let's Get Ugly]

The Wonderstuff came up in conversation last night during a very enjoyable evening with [info]sarahloo, [info]unascertained and [info]maleghast. I have tonight been eschewing the usual racket I listen to these days and popped on a couple of old cassettes.

First up was "The Eight Legged Groove Machine" by The Wonderstuff, their rather wonderful debut album. I remember them playing "Give Give Give Me More More More" on a late 80's "yoof" TV programme I think. Bought the album on the strength of that alone and wasn't disappointed.

Right now I've got "Box Frenzy" by Pop Will Eat Itself on. Again another 80s indie classic. Anyone around my age must remember hearing "Beaver Patrol" and "There Is No Love Between Us" in the indie/alternative clubs of the day.

One thing that struck me was how many of the lyrics I remembered. Probably haven't heard some of those tracks for 15 years or more, but was still singing along. Don't worry, no-one was around to hear ;-)

Anyway, I think I'll continue to raid the archives in the next few days. Obviously most of it is Goth and Industrial but who knows I may rediscover some other indie classics along the way!

Download servers don't appear to have fallen over yet ;-) I've just got the MP3 and FLAC versions without problems.

PS Just checked a few seconds of some of the MP3s - it is NIN, not Rick Astley ;-)

Die Krupps + Faderhead [Jan. 18th, 2008|12:44 pm]
[Current Location |Work]
[Current Mood | working]

Bought a ticket for Die Krupps on Sun Feb 3rd at the Electric Ballroom. Was dithering for ages but decided to go since it looks like there'll be some folks from Reading there, plus it's two days after my birthday and I'm not doing much else to celebrate. Got the Monday off work too ;-)

Hope to see some of you there, if anyone fancies a bit of Sunday afternoon "matinee drinking" in the Dev beforehand, let me know. Last few times I've been there on a Sunday, there's been a pretty good DJ playing lots of old Industrial videos :-)

ps More info on gig here: http://kaosuk.myftp.org/kaosuknet/press/flag/listings.txt

Don't know how accurate this is, but if it's true I don't think the Dev won't be quite the same anymore. Also sounds like they treated Robin & the other staff very shabbily.

I really like Spetsnaz, so may well go to this. Don't know a great deal about the other bands, though I like the few few Hocico tracks that I've heard.

Usually can't be arsed with memes, but this one was quick to do :-)

Via [info]thinlizard.

Here is how it works. Copy this list. Leave in the bands you've seen perform live. Delete the ones you haven't and add new ones that you have seen until you reach 25. An asterisk means the previous person had it on their list. Two asterisks means the last two people who did this before you had that band on their list.

Electronically Yours night - Marsheaux + Schmoof - 11th Oct [Jul. 28th, 2007|08:54 am]
Bit of LJ pimping for my mate Rob's "Electronically Yours" night on the 11th October at the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen in London. To celebrate 30 years of the Human League, he's organized "a night of full-on electro" with Marsheaux, Schmoof and DJs EMP, A-DAM and Mat Nida.

More details here:

EDIT: tickets now available to buy on line!

Don't know all the bands, but FLA, XP8 and Trauma Pet are reasons enough for me to go!

Let's hope the line-up problems that have plagued some Flag Promotions events in the past don't occur again. IIRC last year's Elektrofest and Black Celebration went ahead as advertised, so hope that's a good omen for this year.

Birthday Beers last night [Feb. 3rd, 2007|11:27 am]
Spent Friday night at South Hill Park as usual. Since it was Birthday Friday for John and myself, there was a good turnout: Me (obviously), John, [info]abster1974, Gary, Steph, Sean, Paola, Simon, Rob, Pete, [info]evilbun, [info]reznorsedge and [info]pygar (apologies if I forgot anyone)!

We had one or two drinks...

I work right by J11 on the M4. Today in the office we witnessed a classic "Police Camera Action!" moment. Some utter nutjob was driving down the M4 heading west ON THE WRONG SIDE. IN THE MIDDLE LANE. IN THE WET. Best bit though? Having eventually realised this was a bit stilly, the driver wisely decides to turn around. Not, as you might think, by diving over to the hard shoulder as soon as possible. Oh no, this driver turns round in the middle lane! Amazingly, no-one hit him, though a lorry came *very* close.

Scary!

Another great night at Church of Madness last night. Music was fantastic as usual, quite a few "oooooh I haven't that for aaaaaages" moments ;-) Remembered to drink plenty of water before crashing out so not feeling too bad this morning... :-)

Oh, and for the benefit of [info]reznorsedge, [info]pygar and Psychosonic spacehopper, it *is* five seconds per mile...so there!

Hello! Thought I'd put something up here in case anyone actually bothers to read this journal. To be honest, I only got an account to join the [info]_drop_zone_ community and keep in touch with a few other people. Still, I may put some stuff up here one day!

In case you were wondering about the 0x44 thing, my real name is Darren, but my friends call me D. Now, I have to admit that D is not the most original of nicknames, so it has usually been taken as a username when I get around to joining sites like LiveJournal. So, being a bit of a geek, I decided to start using 0x44 instead...

#include <stdio.h>

int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
    printf("My name is %c\n", 0x44);
    return 0;
}
